Self-cleaning ovens may sound like science-fiction, but many people already have one in their home. These models come with a special pyrolytic function that heats the cavity to 500°C, turning grease and grime to ash.
This Zanussi video explains it all.
While most ovens only have temperatures of up to around 240°C, Zanussi pyrolytic models like the ZOP37962XA have a setting that heats the cavity to a whopping 500°C.
The intense heat breaks down food remnants, fat and oil in your oven using a process called pyrolysis. The word comes from the Greek pyro, meaning fire, and lysis, meaning to separate.
At these eyebrow-singeing temperatures, the door locks automatically so you can’t burn yourself. It unlocks again once the cycle has finished and the oven has cooled down to 100°C.
If you’re not a fan of cleaning the oven – and who is? – this is amazing. Once the oven is fully cool, simply wipe away the ash that’s left with a damp cloth. No chemicals, no smells, no fuss.
The oven will even remind you it needs cleaning every once in a while.
