How to Wall Mount Your TV

Wall mounted TVs are getting more and more popular – they’re a great way to save space and give your lounge a minimalist look. If you’re mounting a TV yourself, it’s really important to make sure it’s attached to the wall securely. Read on to find out the quickest and safest method.

1. Find the Correct Bracket

There are several TV mounts available which vary in price and functionality. The mounting bracket is normally formed of two pieces – one which attaches to the back of the TV, and the other to the wall.

To find the correctly-sized mount, you can use VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) guidelines. You can find your TV’s VESA dimensions in the product manual, or you can measure the distance between the horizontal and vertical holes on the back of the TV. Use your VESA dimensions to pick the corresponding bracket.

Some manufacturers don’t follow VESA standards, and if this is the case with your TV, you can use an adjustable universal mounting bracket.

2. Choose the Wall Location

To find your TV’s perfect wall spot, cut a piece of paper or cardboard to roughly the same size as your TV. Test the paper on the wall in different locations to see which spot you prefer. You should also consider the following:

  • Glare: If your screen will be in direct sunlight.
  • Different Angles: If you can get a good view from different seating positions.
  • Height: The best position is usually at eye level – typically this is 40-45 inches from the floor.
  • Connections: Whether your TV’s wires will reach the plug sockets and where you will place connected devices, i.e. DVD players and game consoles.

Once you’ve found the ideal location, mark the TV’s corners on the wall lightly with a pencil.

3. Fit the Bracket on the TV

Make sure your TV isn’t still attached to a base or stand, and locate the four screw holes on the back. With the TV upright, attach the mount’s part which screws into the TV with a screwdriver. You should then check that the screws are lined up and tightened properly.

4. Mark the Positions on the WallMaking Wall Markings

Place the wall section of the mounting bracket against the bracket fitted to the TV. Then, measure the space between the bottom of the TV and the bottom of the bracket.

Mark on the wall where the bottom of the bracket will sit. Using a spirit level, hold the bracket up against the wall and mark where the drill holes will be with a pencil.

5. Attach the Bracket to the Wall

Drill in the marked holes and place rawl plugs inside each one – use a spirit level to ensure the holes are still level. You should then hold the bracket over the drilled holes, and attach it in with screws.

Before you mount your TV, connect all your cables and get a second pair of hands to help you lift and position.

Lift the TV carefully, and attach the two parts of the mount together with a screwdriver. Make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions to secure all the brackets correctly. Before you let go, check that the mount is sturdy enough to hold the weight of your TV.

Additional Tips

Mounting your TV incorrectly could result in damage to your wall, floor and TV, so it’s worth taking the time to make sure you’re working safely. Take a look at our handy tips to help you mount your TV successfully:

  • Check your TV’s weight against the weight holding of your mount.
  • Never mount a large TV on a stud or partition wall.
  • Don’t attach the bracket to the TV with a drill.
  • Always lift the TV with an extra pair of hands.

You could also consider cord-concealing options to hide any dangling wires. Cable covers are readily available online, and help to keep your walls looking neat and tidy.
